You must first disable the updates; otherwise as soon as you remove the update and reboot your computer, the update will automatically reload.

To disable the updates:

1. Click on Start.
2. Click on Settings if necessary.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double-click on Security Center.
5. Click on Automatic Updates (located at the bottom of the pop-up screen).
6. Select either Notify me but... or Turn off Automatic Updates. (You may choose the one that you prefer).
7. Click on OK.

To remove the update:

1. Click on Start.
2. Click on Settings if necessary.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Click on Add or Remove Programs.
5. Check the Show updates box at the top of the pop-up screen.
6. Scroll down and look for Security Update for Windows XP (KB917422).
7. Click on this update.
8. Click on Remove.
9. Continue following the prompts such as Next and Finish to remove the update.
10. Restart your computer.
